What leads to surface bubbles in some 3D printed models?

1. What’s the Issue with My 3D Print?

Have you noticed that after finishing the 3D printing process, a bubble-like formation frequently appears at the top of your model? This irregularity may indicate a model failure or missing layers, which can sometimes detract from the overall look of the printed piece. In this article, we will discuss the reasons behind this bubbling problem and how to fix it.

2. What Leads to the Bubble Problem?

Although this issue might first seem comparable to a missing layer, it is generally caused by two primary factors: an incorrect resin profile and the properties of the resin /environmental conditions.

Incorrect resin profile

  • Inadequate normal layer exposure time
  • Too fast lifting speed
  • Insufficient rest time or light-off delay

Resin properties and temperature

  • Thick/viscous resin
  • Low ambient temperatures can lead to an increase in resin viscosity and a decrease in its reactivity.

3. Addressing the Bubble Problem

To fix the bubble issue on the model, you may need to tweak various settings, switch or modify your resin, and apply post-processing techniques for a complete resolution. The following steps are organised by their likelihood of effectively identifying and resolving the printing problem.

Adjusting the resin profile settings

  • Please refer to the Resin Profile to ensure your resin settings are properly configured.
  • Increase the standard layer exposure time by 10%.
  • Reduce the lifting speed to 40 mm/min.
  • Extend the rest time.
  • Modify the light-off delay time based on the recommendations from this Calculator.

Examining resin characteristics and managing resin

  • Shake the resin bottle for 30 seconds to 1 minute prior to pouring it into the resin vat.
  • Pre-heating the resin can be beneficial.
  • Opt for resins with lower viscosity when possible.

Employ post-processing methods

  • By sanding the model after it has cured.
  • Then, manually fill the hole with resin and cure it using a UV light source.

Suggestion

If you are using a third-party resin or cannot find your resin on our resin profile page, please use a Resin Exposure Finder to dial in your settings. Light-off delay time is essential in resin 3D printing. With the correct settings, each layer will be printed in a much more stable manner, resulting in better quality 3D prints.
